Autumn At Home | A Peek Inside

This is autumn at home, all things cozy and good: decorative wheat, play costumes, pumpkins both big and small, baskets full of warmer layers, piles of library books and laundry, apple-y treats, tightly rolled honeycomb candles, flannel sheets, and crockpot suppers and soups. The days are shorter, our beds warmer, and our floorboards are peppered round the clock with dried leaves, even after a good sweeping. The kids plus the wind blow them in, but soon enough, there’ll be no leaves that blow and only snow. So I go with it.

Autumn during the day starts cold, gets surprisingly hot, then it returns cold once more. I live for the briskness of it all, for mornings that beg for warm mugs and slippers. Change is alive and brewin’, I can hear it, see it, feel it, for it’s the season for slowing down, cozying up, longer morning prayers, and letting go. I hope autumn has been good to you so far. I hope it’s been soft and gentle. I hope you’ve had a chance to savor it, but if not, there’s still plenty of time. Go for a long walk in the leaves with nothing but yourself, ears open to the crunch. Bake something extra sweet with pumpkin or squash in it. Put maple syrup in everything. Clean your closets, pull out your sweaters, and go buy a new pair of wool socks. Light a candle, or a fire, and sip mulled wine or cinnamon tea.Or maybe non of those things, maybe just take a long weekend nap. There are so many ways to enjoy this time of year, the key being slowwarmth. Enjoy, dear ones, enjoy. xx Amanda

  • Alexandra - I love to know there are moms and women out there like me, who delight in the little signs of life [messes, leaves etc] that make their way through our doors on the heels of our children. This morning I had a cup of chai and it was truly restorative. The house has had a good clean and I’ve put out some pheasant feathers in one of my pottery vases. Cheers to warmth, home and family!ReplyCancel
