Old Bluesy Soul | An Autumn Playlist

Fun fact for you: I used to moonlight serving and bartending in an old blues and jazz club in Kansas City for several years when we first moved here. We lived down the street, literally a stone’s throw away, in an old historic hotel with an large, round atrium in the center, turned in its most recent years into loft-style condos. I’d get up before the sun to go teach little ones English during the day, and mix drinks behind the bar until well into the evening and early morning hours. Looking back, I have no idea how on earth I was able to pull that rigorous schedule off, not having kids may have something to do with it, alas, we needed the money because we were both starting out in our careers, but honestly, I enjoyed every bit of it. I loved working there and being surrounded by the uplifting energy of the soulful music, the rich, weathered mahogany, the dim, almost too dark, dining area, and the content regulars with their two fingers of whiskey.

Working there I had the opportunity to see how much of a difference jazz and blues made in people’s long days, and in turn, my own. It was the first place I made real friends after moving here from Iowa, we knew no one, and the first place that introduced me to blues. This autumn playlist is a little tribute to that time, a special slice of my life when I’d meet Andrew on the sidewalk as the leaves swirled in the lot across the street for a kiss during my “smoke” break (that I happily took with my coworkers even though I didn’t smoke), back when I’d serve him for dinner so we’d get the chance to talk a bit and see one another’s face for longer than a kiss on that sidewalk. I am happily living a very different life today, but that time is still very much a part of me, of us, and this music is a big part of that.

*Note: You must have Spotify to listen. And if you want a slower paced, more folk-inspired acoustic playlist, I’ve added dozens of new songs to Sweater Weather | An Autumn Playlist – so check that out too! There’s over 5 hours of listening, and should keep you happy and feeling the autumn vibes throughout the day, or at least that’s my hope! Happy listening, friends.
